As a result of the economic crisis there is a widespread expectation that businesses should be more accountable to society. One important step in that direction would be to require companies to publish data on their social and environmental impacts across the supply chain. But the European Commission's new proposal on Corporate Social Responsibility reporting has been weakened by industry pressure to the extent that it is now virtually meaningless.
